Steele, 39, suffered a medical emergency during the performance for Brii Combination Wrestling (BCW) at a Knights of Columbus on Bergen Avenue in Ridgefield Park, as fans watched in horror on Sunday, March 16, BCW confirmed. Steele allegedly collapsed during a four-way match. The venue regularly plays host to independent wrestling shows.
BCW thanked the Ridgefield Park Police Department, "who were on the scene within minutes and immediately provided emergency medical assistance," the promotion said. "Despite their rapid response and the best efforts of first responders, we tragically lost Vince."
"This is an unimaginable loss, and we ask for patience and respect as we process this tragedy," BCW said. "We will share more details in the coming days on how we plan to honor Vince’s incredible legacy."
Coastal Championship Wrestling confirmed Steele's passing in a statement.
"We are heartbroken to learn about the passing of 'The Jurassic Juggernaut' Vince Steele," it reads.
"Vince’s matches in CCW are legendary. From his long-standing feud and later partnership with Cha Cha Charlie to his battles with The South American Alliance and Vinicious in the early days of Bash At The Brew. There was no one quite like Vince."
